For a Healthier you in 2018 do these…

As we enter a new year, it’s common place for people to make New Year resolutions. If you made resolutions at the start of 2017, how many were fulfilled? How many of your resolutions involved your health? We have always been advised to make healthy lifestyle a habit so you won’t be caught in the vicious cycle of same New Year Resolutions every year.

For a healthier you in 2018 set specific goals for the year like these:

1. Drink enough water daily:
Do you drink enough water? If you don’t usually drink a glass of water before dinner, you can start doing so. Aim to drink at least 3 litres a day. Do you usually eat with a bottle of soda? Drink water instead!

2. Cook your own meals:
When you cook your own meals or eat home-cooked meals this year, you are deliberately ensuring your meals are the right balance and healthy.

3. Eat more veggies and fruits:
Make eating a fruit or vegetable a daily habit. Eating seasonal fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of developing digestive system diseases.

4. Eat mindfully:
If you are used to eating in a rush, this year, make eating more fun by taking time to savour the taste of each meal. Eat slowly taking your time to chew your food. Also be mindful of the meals set before you because the way you eat is as important as what you eat .

 5. Cut back on sugar consumption:
Cut down on soda, sweetened beverages and sugary foods. Beyond losing weight, excessive sugar intake is not good for your general well-being.

6. Make exercising a habit:
If registering in a gym will make you exercise often, by all means do. Benefits of an active lifestyle cannot be overemphasized. Don’t be a couch potato. Don’t use time as an excuse for not exercising.

7. Make conscious effort to lose weight:
What weight did you enter 2018 with? Did you try losing weight last year but hit a brick wall? Don’t give up just yet. Just ensure your BMI is within the healthy range of 18.5 to 25. Engage in the best exercise for your body. This will reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes.

8. Go for regular medical checkup:
If you are one of those who hardly go for a medical checkup, 2018 is a good year to go for one. You will realize how helpful it is to know your health status.

9. Read more and improve yourself intellectually:
Read more in 2018. Register for that exam this year and read for it! Attend seminars and handwrite notes. Your brain will thank you for it.

10. Get enough sleep daily:
Readjust your lifestyle to accommodate between 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. You may need to cut your screen time on your mobile phone or television.

11. Keep a diary of your accomplishments and progress in 2018. This will motivate you to acheive more.

12. Always give thanks to God everyday. It’s great to be alive!
