A lot of things have been said about the role of sex positions in conception. Baring any other fertility problems, it’s still debatable if any particular sex position will boost your chances of conceiving.
It’s a no-brainer that your chances of getting pregnant are maximized by deeper penetration during sex. So any style or position that encourages the tip of the penis to reach the cervix is the real deal, since this allows semen to be deposited right inside the cervix.
Researchers with a team from CMC Beau Soleil in France took Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRIs) of couples to show what is going on in two positions: missionary (or man on top) and doggy style (or rear entry)
The scans confirm that the tip of the penis reaches the areas between the cervix and vaginal walls in both of these positions. The missionary position allows the penis to reach the area at the front of the cervix. The rear entry or doggy position reaches the area at the back of the cervix, making it the deepest.
However, Dr James Goldfarb, director of the infertility service at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, said women shouldn’t worry too much about positions.
It’s also known that certain gravity-defying positions, such as sitting or standing during intercourse, may discourage sperm from travelling upstream.
Some people insist that a woman holding their legs up in the air after sex will boost their chances of conceiving.
Dr Goldfarb says this is not necessary – but he does recommend not jumping up out of bed straight away.
‘It’s good advice to lay in bed for 10 to 15 minutes after intercourse, but you don’t need your feet in the air,’ he said.
‘If you wait 10 to 15 minutes, the sperm that is going to get into the cervix will be in the cervix.’
He also advises women not to go the bathroom during this time either.
However, some experts disagree that some sex positions are better than others in conceiving. Their argument is based on the fact that some well endowed men with great skills can get the tip of their penis to the cervix irrespective of the sex position adopted and this still doesn’t guarantee that the released sperm would fertilize the eggs faster.
Do you agree that these two sex positions (missionary and doggy) are best in boosting your chances of pregnancy. Share your thoughts with us.
