Why you should STOP the use of toilet paper

Why you should STOP the use of toilet paper!

When I was in my mid-teens, I had a close friend from the western part of Nigeria. The toilet in her house never had toilet paper, but it always had a bucket of water and a small bowl.

The first time I needed to obey “nature’s call” while at her house, I got into the  toilet and not until I had finished my bidding did I notice there wasn’t any toilet paper.

I called out to her to bring some to me and she echoed back “use the water to wash your bombom”.

Coming from a home where the practice was using toilet paper to clean up after a poop, I found it crazy that someone would ask me to put my fingers in between my buttocks filled with feces and “wash it”. I removed my pant (underwear) instead, wiped my anus with it and trashed it.

With time, I started noticing that the act of washing ones anus and vagina with water after peeing or pooping was a practice not synonymous with my friend’s family alone, but a lot of people actually do that.

One day, I suffered diarrhea and was forced to practice the “anus-hand-washing therapy” because my rectum had become sore from excessive wipes using dry toilet paper. Do you know what? It was so soothing to my anal skin and my anus felt really clean.

Research has shown that wiping your anus with dry toilet paper can actually leave feces behind and cause health problems. Excessive wiping of your rectum increases your risk of developing fissures or hemorrhoids. An anal fissure is a tear in the lining of the rectum and can cause bleeding or pain for the person when they are pooping.

“I find it rather baffling that millions of people are walking around with dirty anuses while thinking they are clean. Toilet paper moves sh*t, but it doesn’t remove it”, says Rose George, author of The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters.

Even celebrities like, will.i.am, Terrance Howard and Will Smith advocate for the use of wipes instead of toilet paper.

Will Smith, speaking with a BBC 1 Radio in an interview said,  “I’m the type of person that it’s important for me to share. When I experience something that’s special and incredible, I like to share it with people. Anyone who’s using dry toilet paper, you’re really not doing yourself the true service”.

It is advisable to stop the use of toilet paper after a poop and go for either wet wipes or a bidet,  and if you’re courageous enough, you can  wash your buttocks with your hand, using clean water after every visit to the toilet

  1. Been using water for about 10 years now. It takes away the leftover faeces and leaves the anus feeling fresh. I use tissue in situations where there’s absence of water.

  2. Toilet Paper is obsolete and just plain nasty and Wet Wipes are causing expensive clogs in the sewers and septic systems. With modern plumbing we should be washing with water not smearing with wads of paper and the best way to do that is with a Hand Held Bidet Sprayer. It’s better than a Bidet because it does a better job cleaning you, requires no new plumbing, costs under $100 and provides superior, healthier, money saving hygiene. See bathroomsprayer.com.
